Obituary: Willard A. Miner, 94, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2009, at the Cayuga Medical Center after a short illness. He was born on April 1, 1914 in Madison, CT, to William and Emily Miner. He attended the United States Naval Academy and served in the Merchant Marine during WWII. Following his service, he worked as a design engineer at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, and a number of other companies in Connecticut before retiring in 1979. Will greatly enjoyed his retirement years, traveling throughout the United States in a motorhome. In 1995, he and his wife, Janet, settled in Southern Pines, NC, but continued to spend winters in Naples, Florida, continuing to drive his motorhome into his late 80’s. After a marriage of 62 years, Janet passed away in 2005. Will then moved to Ithaca to be near family and had been thriving and enjoying life at Sterling House (Alterra) on Bundy Rd. While residing at Sterling House, Will participated in numerous activities, staying active and engaged. He was a lover of poetry, and wrote many poems reflecting his spiritual nature, fondness for other residents, and his respect for all living things. His favorite pastime was playing Scrabble with good friends at Sterling House, and with family. In addition, he was an avid photographer who particularly loved clouds, Cayuga Lake, and other nature scenes as subjects for his photos, although he also regularly captured his beloved friends and family. Will will be remembered as a true gentleman, who treated everyone with genuine respect, interest, and kindness. He brought a positive outlook to his interactions with others, that was reflected in his good humor and delight in learning about others’ lives and experiences. He will be deeply, deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to have known him. He is survived by his son, Alex Miner, wife, JoAnne (Lansing), grandson, Jesse Miner (Chapel Hill, NC); daughter, Catherine Elliott, husband Steven (Simsbury, CT), granddaughters, Hayley (Simsbury, CT) and Kate (Santa Barbara, CA); and son, Thomas Miner (Bennington, VT), granddaughter Audrey (CT).
