Research is incomplete on my Great Grandfather, Ira Williams. His parents and ancestry have not been conclusively identified.
It is believed that Ira Williams was born in 1814 in Catatonk, in the vicinity of Candor, Tioga County, New York. Some genealogies link him to Hiram Williams and Abigail (Ford) Williams, but this has not been proved. According to one of his Great Granddaughters, he had brothers, Adinajah and Harvey Williams, and he had a grandmother with the maiden name of Vincent. The name Vincent was passed down through the generations to the male members of the family. These facts are in conflict with the Ford genealogy account of their Ira Williams. It is my conjecture that the Ira Williams mentioned in the Ford Genealogy was born in 1802 and died 7 Jan 1828 at age 26 and is buried at the Woodbridge Cemetery in Candor, NY with his parents, Hiram and Abigail (Ford) Williams.
Adinajah Williams is accounted for in the 1840, 1850, 1855, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Federal Census enumerations in Candor, Tioga County, New York. His wife was Phebe Ann and his children were: David, Eliza, George, Lucy Ann, Ezra O., Adolinda and Everetta/Esther E. Williams. Adinajah Williams died in 1884 in Candor, Tioga County, New York.
Harvey Williams is accounted for in the 1850 Federal Census in Candor, Tioga County, New York with his wife, Lucinda and their four children, Herman, Almeda, Caroline and Charles. He may have died between 1850 and 1860 as his wife is enumerated in the 1860 Federal Census in Danby, Tompkins County, New York as a single woman with two of her children, Caroline and Lucius or Charles. Almeda Williams was enumerated with the Isaac Beers family also in Danby, NY.
An Ira Williams was enumerated in 1840 as a single man, age 20-30 in Towanda Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. If our information is correct and he was born in 1814 that would put him at age 26 in 1840 and could conceivably be the the one enumerated there. The census for Towanda was enumerated approximately June of 1840. Ira Williams married Olive Cook Ufford 24 December 1840. It is not known why he was in Towanda in 1840, how he met Olive Ufford or where they were married.
Ira Williams and Olive Cook Ufford were married 24 December 1840. They had children: Sarah Louise born, 6 March 1842; Ira Vincent, born 12 Jan 1844; Emma Lucy, born 27 Oct 1845 and Ansel Frederick, born 21 August 1847. The children were all born in Owego, Tioga County, New York. Ira Williams died 27 June 1847 in Tioga County, New York. His wife, Olive Williams was made administratrix of Ira Williams' Estate in June of 1847 according to the card index at the Tioga County Historical Society. His will/probate/estate/guardianship papers or burial records have not yet been located.
Olive Williams is enumerated in the 1850 Federal Census in Spencer, Tioga County, New York with her children, Ira, Emily and Ansel on the same page as her parents, Nathanial and Hannah (Berry) Ufford. Sarah Louise had gone to live with her great uncle and aunt, Ansel and Hannah (Gage) Berry in Norwich, New York which is where she probably met her husband to be, Sereno W. Miner who was of Norwich, New York as enumerated in the 1850-1860 Federal Census for Norwich, Chenango County, New York. Sarah Louise Williams and Sereno W. Miner were married 9 Sept. 1863 possibly in Norwich, New York.
